Reinforcing or positive feedback loops are amplifying, aiming to move away from the status quo, shaking the system (network structure) to create a new status quo.
Also called vicious cycles and virtuous cycle.
Short delay: rapid escalation (the system shifts quickly into a new state; e.g., panic spreading fast).
- Usually smaller impact on the system. Less casualties
Large delay: sudden, dramatic tipping point after a buildup (the system appears stable, then collapses or flips rapidly; e.g., financial crash, ecological collapse). - Usually larger impact on the system. Can create a tipping point where the system has a lot of casualties. May lead to system collapse.
Economic example: Technologies (high risk, high reward)
- The more someone dominates, the more he will continue to dominate. Having the lead gives you an advantage.
- Unless there is something in the system that give chances others to catch up.
