- Resistance: capacity to function under stress / resist change
- Resilience: "Resilience is the capacity of this system to absorb change and disturbances , and still retain its basic structure and function—its identity" / return to a desired state
- Specified resilience = disturbance that you are aware of
- General resilience = disturbances that you haven't even thought of
- Some inefficiencies in the system can be critical for resilience (slack)
- Usually has some short term tradeoffs for long-term persistence
Resistance and resilience are enhanced with diversity
Because Systems are about balance, there needs to be a balance between resistance and resilience too!
